Rohypnol is a drug that is classified as a benzodiazepine and acts as a sedative similar to Xanax or Valium. Rohypnol is a prescription medication that has proved helpful for many applications in patients, such as treating narcolepsy and help for seizures in patients. There is, however, a great potential for misuse and abuse of benzodiazepines in general, but with Rohypnol, the risk is even greater. Rohypnol is roughly ten times more powerful than Valium, and its risks are magnified.
One of the most prominent risks associated with Rohypnol is as a date rape drug and being roofied. Being roofied means that you are unknowingly given this drug, typically in a club or party setting, and quickly become inebriated and soon unconscious. Even when you do wake up after being unknowingly dosed, one of the symptoms of being roofied is that you will unlikely have any memory of what occurred when you were out.
When out on the town for a drink, you suddenly feel like you have gone way over your limit for alcohol after just one drink; be wary of what was in your drink. Alcohol magnifies the effects of Rohypnol. Experiencing the symptoms of being roofied, you may become dizzy and utterly disoriented to the point of being totally unaware of where you are.
When, after consuming a beverage, you suddenly suffer from an overwhelming need for sleep and simply cannot stay awake to the point where confusion takes over, you may have been roofied. Rohypnol is a sedative, and blacking out is a real danger at this point.
You may find that after being roofied, you have very little memory of what happened earlier or how you ended up where you are currently. The symptoms of memory loss can last up to 12 hours or more after being dosed.
Waking up and having the worst hangover of your life with extreme nausea and vomiting is a common experience after being dosed with Rohypnol, especially when there is alcohol involved. The typical symptoms of a hangover can be significantly magnified after being roofied, leaving you feeling very ill.
Typically, Rohypnol will show slightly blue in light-colored beverages, so if the color looks off or you left your drink unattended for any time, do not consume it. It is best not to finish your beverage. If you consumed the drink before noticing something was wrong, seek help immediately from someone you came with and report the incident to law enforcement. If you are alone, call for help, drink water, and stay around crowds of people until help arrives in the form of the authorities.
Seek immediate medical attention for the symptoms of being roofied, as it is essential to be treated for any adverse effects of the drug, along with documenting the incident. Be sure to take care of yourself with enough rest, nutrition, and water intake after being roofied. It can be overwhelming, and the need for self-care is an integral part of healing.
